Vintage Tunes, Modern Gal is my love letter to my earliest memories of variety and solo shows–watching Marx Brothers movies with my dad, Sonny and Cher reruns with my mom, Looney Tunes with my brother, and Mel Brooks DVDs with any friends who were also down to finish the movie and then immediately start it again with the director's commentary.
I bought my first ukulele from Hogeye Music in Evanston, IL and played it at my high school talent show. My act was a mashup of "Kumbaya" and "Hey Ya!" and I've never looked back. This show is for the lone wolves out there who are still getting their footing back in expressing themselves and finding their people. In making the show, I forced myself to take a lot of first ideas - even if they felt silly or not good enough - reconnecting with the creativity that came so easy to me before a certain pandemic got in the way. And it's also been a practice not getting mad at myself when I needed to spend a lot of time on getting another idea just right. Some things started to come back naturally, and some were really work! Special thanks to David Rhoads, Vanessa Valliere, Richie Whitehead, Andrew J. Daniels Photography, the Neo-Futurists, and the vibrant, supportive, and deeply deeply strange Fringe community.
